Squanto

Squanto was very important to the pilgrims of the mayflower, for he knew there language. Which was probably the best thing that could happen to the pilgrim so there was not that same clash that happened with the crew of Jamestown. But because of earlier english explorers and settlers the some Native Americans were slowly understanding their langauge. But because of the devoution of squanto and the help he gave the pilgrims, the pilgrims survived to the thanks of Squanto.

Jamestowns first encounter of the native Americans

In this picture called the "Jamestowns Massacre" it shows that the Native Americans are attacking the settlers of Jamestown, which did not happen. For ones reason it did not happen because Pocahontas was the advisor and favorite daughter of the chief and told him that their village should live in peace. She help Captain John Smith out by preventing his exectution. Also in this picture there is no wall surrounding Jamestown which there would be because there are females in the picture which came upon the next ship of supplies to them. And by that time there were only a few members of the first crew left and so there was not the many people. I also think there is bias in this picture just because if you see how they drew the native Americans and how wild they all look.  It just shows on how liable pictures are.

Native American Visions

So in class this week we are watching viseos on Native American culture and the many legends on how the world was created in their views.  Native American culture really interests me with all of the unique ceremonyies and the music is my favorite. So when I came home I asked my family if they knew any call facts or legends on Natives Americans and this is what I got. I read a first hand example of a vision quest from an Oklahoma Native American whose name is Joseph Epses Brown. Where in his vision he walked in the four directions and saw an eagle flying toward him and he was seeing all of these different birds like a woodpecker telling him "be attentive and have no fear". At night thunder birds filled the sky he said and he was afraid but he prayed to Wakan-Takan. he would then here voices and remember what the bird told him that he should "be attentive and have no fear"
