Jamestowns first encounter of the native Americans

In this picture called the "Jamestowns Massacre" it shows that the Native Americans are attacking the settlers of Jamestown, which did not happen. For ones reason it did not happen because Pocahontas was the advisor and favorite daughter of the chief and told him that their village should live in peace. She help Captain John Smith out by preventing his exectution. Also in this picture there is no wall surrounding Jamestown which there would be because there are females in the picture which came upon the next ship of supplies to them. And by that time there were only a few members of the first crew left and so there was not the many people. I also think there is bias in this picture just because if you see how they drew the native Americans and how wild they all look.  It just shows on how liable pictures are.

  1. Interessting point about how the Native Americans. It is sure biasesd against them, as you said. They look like an unorganized group of ferocious backstabbers. It looks like an older picture, too, so it must been from a big anti-Indian time period.

  2. JBusss makes an interesting point in saying it must have been a big anti-Indian time period. The picture shows it as if the settlers had no way to defend themselves. They had cannons, weapons, and a fort surrounding them. You are absolutely right in saying something like this did not happen.

  3. There were massacres on both sides, but not during the time of Pocahontas. This is a terrific picture to illustrate bias. Thanks!
